"1984" written by George Orwell is the book that has most influenced me.
Contemporary society in Australia embodies everything Orwell feared.
Cameras everywhere.
More and more forms...
Numbing conformity abounds. No laughter. A colourless, humourless, joyless, social desert characterised by a people grittily determined to either boss each other around or completely ignore each other or both.
I take care to sensitively interrogate people form other cultures who live here. This is what they think: they think we are cold, rude and uncaring. They are much too polite to tell us this because they do not want to insult us. It has to be coaxed out of them. But that is how they see us.
Xenophobia rules too..
"Go back to your own country, Miss" a pupil will tell a chinese student teacher.
To gain entry to my workplace I have to fill in a form to get a plastic card. But before I can use it I have to fill in yet another form!
George Orwell predicted accurately that when his nightmare world came into being the victims would be in denial about it's very existence. It is worse: many Australians are enthusiastic supporters and promoters of this dull grey nihilistic nightmare.
I'm afraid not many people see things as I do.
