Amateurism at a University in Adelaide
So my neighbor tells me that she works at a University in
Adelaide and does the marking of English
assignments for overseas students.
She does it to help out these students who have an
Australian scholarship. My neighbor is one of those generous people who think
it is a good idea to give more than is expected at work. She has faith in her
employers and the system. So she normally puts 12-14 hours into the marking of
a ten hour assignment. (This of course spoils the market for the rest of us
mortals who put in ten hours work and expect to be paid for it.. but this is by
the way…)
Proofreading and copyreading is what my neighbour is paid
for
So she is given a paper by a
Pakistani lady with a Phd who wants her paper “made to look good’ as
well as copyread and proofread.
Having spent 15 hours on the assignment and having had it
sent back twice by the student, eventually my neighbor says that’s it is finished….
So, when my neighbor claims her money from the University
–the university asks her to get the student to sign off before they pay.
So the student says it is not finished.
and the university sends my neighbour an e-mail saying they
won’t pay until the student signs.
What preposterous and amateurish behavior on the part of the University!
It is the university’s responsibility for quality control of
work–not the bloody student. That is why the
student has come to the University in the first place!
The University has abrogated all responsability for quality
control –and handed it, not to the marker , but to the student!!!
It is bad enough for the University to ask the marker to
contact the student to sign off. That is the University administration’s
job-not the job of a lecturer. That is is bad enough--but it is much, much worse to withhold payment to the marker until the students
signs.
How much more humiliating will it get to be an
instructor/Lecturer /Teacher in Australia?
Do you want us to wear a dog collar when we teach?
Can our status get
any lower?
Our status is now below that of the student!
