A young, relatively unqualfied Irish teacher with zero experience ( and with a mere TEFL Certificate) was quite puzzled, even shocked shocked today at Flinders. She was complaining to G.
"My friends have just come out from Ireland with Teaching qualifications AND TEFL qualifications and can't get a response from any of the language colleges in Adelaide. They have applied everywhere in Adelaide for a job and haven't even got an acknowledgment! No response at all.
They've gone to Darwin to look for a job"
"How can that be?" She was visibly shocked, "because I myself have almost no teacher training at all?" she said incredulously.
As an afterthought, and with a look of concern, she said...
'Am I really so lucky to have this job?'
"I'm not surprised by it" I said
Later, when the girl had left, I said to G.
"You know why her friends haven't got a job and she has-because she is cheaper to employ."
"Absolutely" said G.
Work choices and the deregulated Liberal ( 'Conservative') market ethics...
The moral of the story is...
'Don't study, and don't develop yourself professionally, because if you do you will price yourself out of the job market' said I.
And now there's some good advice for my teenagers.
My young unqualified and inexperienced Irish friend has a full-time job, and her teacher friends have none!
She made the smart decision NOT to develop herself professionally and has been rewarded for it!
"I'm lucky to have my one course to teach. I should be grateful" I said to myself, because I have two masters degrees and a doctorate. "Of course, the well-paying jobs for which I am also qualified are all reserved for the locals!"
Serve ya right for movin away from your home town, Don!
